Abraham Lincoln in Michigan:  28 min. c. 1999

The struggle over the moral contradiction of slavery took place in the hearts and minds of people all across America prior to the Civil War. In the summer of 1856 a relatively unknown congressman from Illinois took the platform in a park in Kalamazoo and delivered a speech which detailed his thoughts on slavery and state’s rights. It was one of the few speeches recorded at this period of his life and was a precursor to the “house divided” speech. This film brings to life an important chapter in our nation’s history.
