Grades 3 - 12 :50 min.
There is no better way to teach students about The Great Depression than through the eyes of a CCC boy. Massive unemployment inspired President Roosevelt to create a public works program that placed 17-25 year old youth in work camps, reforesting logged over lands, fighting forest fires and taking on dozens of other projects.
Students will learn how teenagers repaired damaged natural resources planting 700 million trees in Michigan and Wisconsin. They will discover how enrollees were chosen for leadership positions and how thousands voluntarily earned 8th grade diplomas. They will hear moving stories of fatherless teens who found role models. Students will learn how camps maintained discipline and how enrollees overcame anger management issues. Students will also find out how the enrollees dealt with camp bullies and racial issues that caused the camps to become segregated.
This is another eye- opening assembly, which will remain with students long after they participate in the program. While many stories are full of humor, others are heartfelt and speak of the great struggles young people endured during the economic depression. A five minute video Bill produced, helps bring these stories to life along with his original songs and stories.
