Grades 3 - 12 :50 min.
There is no better way to teach students about The Great Depression than through the eyes of a CCC boy. Massive unemployment inspired President Roosevelt to create a public works program that placed 17-25 year old youth in work camps, reforesting logged over lands, fighting forest fires and taking on dozens of other projects.
Students will learn how teenagers repaired damaged natural resources planting 700 million trees in Michigan and Wisconsin. They will discover how enrollees were chosen for leadership positions and how thousands voluntarily earned 8th grade diplomas. They will hear moving stories of fatherless teens who found role models. Students will learn how camps maintained discipline and how enrollees overcame anger management issues. Students will also find out how the enrollees dealt with camp bullies and racial issues that caused the camps to become segregated.
Motivational Talk Bill has developed a motivational talk for regular and at-risk students, based on his CCC program. Today’s teens respond to the stories about teens in The Great Depression and what their great-grandparents went through. The stories of poverty, hunger and unemployment are balanced with stories of self-discipline, maturity and self-reliance. This motivational talk encourages youth to re-examine their lives and the opportunities they have.
